The light art festival GOLDSTUECKE was founded in 2019. The decentral exhibition project takes place in the city center of Gelsenkirchen-Buer. From 2019 to 2021, it was curated by Antje Grajetzky (City Administration) and Christiane Wanken (Art Museum); since 2022, Bettina Pelz has been the artistic director. During the festival, light and light-based media artwork are displayed in public sites such as the city hall or a public garden, in all the art and culture institutions such as the art museum, the cinema, or the local art association, trade and private spaces. The festival presents contemporary artworks, partly commissioned. It features artwork working with light and light-based media; it has a strong strand on optical and kinetic artwork due to the museum’s collection focus. Each edition is dedicated to a topic at the crossroads of art, public space, and
society. Admission is free.

GOLDSTUECKE aims to reflect on the collective use of public space and the role of art in urban culture. It is
an environment for citizens and visitors to interact. It provides a framework to feature light and light-based
media art in a temporary event and supports the development of new artistic vocabularies.
