Shinning since 1879, Blackpool Illuminations is a cultural phenomenon delivering a remarkable annual lightshow that is internationally celebrated, Our autumn 4-month event stretches over 6 miles of the famous promenade featuring traditional festoons and tableaux along Blackpool Promenade – no wonder it’s commonly known as the greatest free light show on Earth! The Blackpool Illuminations now attract more than thirteen million visitors to the resort each year, with many travelling across the UK to see ‘the lights’. In 2023 Blackpool Illuminations were awarded NPO Status with Arts Council England.
In the past 6 years the Illuminations has developed the Lightpool Festival, a contemporary light art public showcase for exciting new artistic and technological collaborations. Underpinning the Illuminations’ display and festival is a growing programme of artists’ talent development and creative community engagement. Going forward, bringing an ambitious artistic vision and commissioning high quality art within the Illuminations is central to our mission.
The festival won the Large Tourism Event at the Lancashire Tourism awards in 2017. Lightpool became an Arts Council National Portfolio Organisation in April 2023.
