Every winter, the city's iconic canals are illuminated for 52 days, with installations of national and international artists.

 

Each edition is centered around a contemporary, relevant theme, which is explored through the artworks and brought to life through storytelling. The installations are placed in the public space, accessible for everyone to enjoy. The route can be experienced on land – by bike or on foot – or from the water by boat.

 

As a makers' festival, we welcome artwork submissions from anyone, whether highly experienced or just starting out, to our annual Open Call. A selection is then brought to life with financial and technical support from the festival. After each edition, some of the artworks become part of the Light Art Collection. This not only gives the artworks a second life, but allows artists to shine on international stages; without the logistic and (legal) hassle. It also promotes the exchange of knowledge in the field of light art and helps the foundation create a new festival and new artworks each year.
